Consumer Driven IT in Review, 7th edition

Happy New Years to all our Consumer Driven IT friends out there!

Everywhere you look at this time of year there are lists - lists of the top stories of 2011, lists of the top predictions for 2012, and of course, New Year's resolutions meant to be noted and then forgotten! I must admit I can't resist joining in the fun, so here is my take on the Top 5 computing solutions that IT should pay attention to in 2012 if they want to leverage consumer driven IT:

1. The consumer cloud: it's here, it's growing and can't be ignored. What to do? As Adam Famularo points out in his recent blog "a sound approach is to adopt internal (e.g., private) cloud services as a prototype. Implement the services; establish the benchmarks, best practices, and policies; and then start moving targeted applications to public, private, or hybrid clouds"

2. Context and content-aware security: Whether it is the context in which an authentication is attempted, or the assessment of the content of data in order to determine appropriate use, context-aware capabilities can help mitigate the risks of consumer driven IT.

3. Outcome-based service assurance: Consumer driven IT is forcing a focus on assuring outcomes down to the transaction level and metrics that look at the end-user experience with the IT service rather than on the underlying elements that contribute to delivering the service itself.

4. Application lifecycle optimization: Consumerization is dramatically accelerating cycle times, so why not leverage cloud-based development and test environments to reduce cycle times and achieve greater efficiencies at the same time? An interesting whitepaper from ITKO explains how.

5. "Big Data" management: the volume and richness of data being generated through consumer driven IT, combined with the blurring of the line between what is considered "inside" versus "outside" the organization will require a revolutionary approach to its management and security.

December 30: 2012 predictions for small business owners by Donna Fuscaldo via Fox Business

Yes, you guessed it - cloud computing and the consumerization of IT are on the list. The point is made that in many ways, small businesses have the most to gain by these trends.

December 29^th: Will mobile devices kill the credit card? by Dominic Basulto via BigThink

Another powerful example of how consumerization will cause disruptions that will transform an entire industry overnight.

December 28: Smarter mobile devices drive demand for mobile BI apps by Rick Whiting via CRN

Business intelligence has already become the third most in-demand enterprise mobile application -- "It's not just another deployment platform for BI applications. It's a whole new opportunity".

December 27: ISACA Recommends Ways to Manage Three Top Trends in 2012: Big Data, Consumerization of IT and Mobile Growth

The three are tightly entwined, so it makes sense to look at these holistically.

December 23: Cloud Computing: Mobile, Social Networking, Big Data Drive IT Development, Investing in 2012 by Clint Boulton via eWeek

Nice slideshow summary of Gartner's and IDC's predictions for 2012.

Hands off, IT: 5 key technologies users must own by Galen Gurman via InfoWorld

Understanding why users focus on these technologies can help IT get the right support tools while avoiding unnecessary ones.

December 22: Top ten consumerization of IT thought leaders by G Cattelain via Matrix42

Some familiar names here, but some new ones too - definitely a good list to add to who you follow on the web and Twitter.

December 21: Making sense of it all: time to sort out this BYOD thing by John Ginovsky via ABA Banking Journal

While not covering any significantly new ground, this article is interesting just by virtue of the fact that the trend is being discussed in a respected banking journal - one would think the last bastion of BYOD holdouts!

December 20: Top 5 consumerization of IT news stories of 2011 by Colin Steele via SearchConsumerization

My personal favorite is #3 - "Personal clouds move to the enterprise".

December 19: 'Tis the season for the consumerization of IT by Nathan McNeill via SC Magazine
