I just returned from two days in Portland Oregon at the Anita Borg Institute’s Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. As a senior technologist, it is a fact of my life that I am frequently the only woman in the meeting, on the team, or in the initiative. All this changes at the Grace Hopper conference, where I am surrounded by 2900 attendees, almost all women. Until I am there, I hardly realize how much energy it takes to be different – small talk on topics of little interest to me, interaction styles different from my comfort zone. I exhale and relax and join my fellow technical women, from freshmen in college through senior execs of major technology companies and institutions, in knowledge sharing and networking. But … I’m not at...

The Web has been a buzz lately about an epic rant by Google engineer Steve Yegge on Google+. The post was intended for Google employees’ eyes only, but Yegge posted it accidently to the entire world. The Washington Post headline was “Google engineer Steve Yegge has his Jerry Maguire moment”. You can read his post here . While the whole post was an insightful and fun read, I found one little nugget particularly revealing of an industry trend that CA Technologies Service Assurance business has been focused on for a while now. From his post ... Monitoring and QA are the same thing. You'd never think so until you try doing a big SOA. But when your service says "oh yes, I'm fine," it may well be the case that the only thing still...

There is a long-standing tendency for products to become commodities over time. As markets mature, manufacturers add new features and match those of their competitors, until eventually goods from various manufacturers become homogenized and, as a result, commoditized. This can lead to slashed prices and reduced profits as companies selling undifferentiated goods are left to compete on price alone. The tendency toward commoditization, and the resulting ability to swap out one product for another with no perceivable impact, was summed up elegantly by Columbia Business School Professor Bruce Greenwald when he declared, “In the long run, everything is a toaster.”* But with commoditization can come opportunity for innovative companies. For example...

What do "Bring Your Own Device" and LaundroMutt have in common? Those of us in the high tech industry often get so caught up in our own world of techno-babble and obscure industry acronyms that we forget there is a huge world out there of people who speak a more straight-forward version of English! I was reminded of that when I recently did a Google search on the term "BYOD". There in the 3 rd position was a link to the LaundroMutt and BYOD self-service dog wash. Yes, BYOD as in "Bring Your Own Dog". I have actually driven by a LaundroMutt several times coming back from Cambridge, Mass. and always thought it had an inspired name. To be perfectly honest, I would be very happy to cede the use of the acronym BYOD to...

I arrived in Las Vegas for my 15th CA World—15 CA World events and 35 years of transformation at C A Technologies. Everywhere you turned you saw the same sense of urgency for the need for speed and agility at this year’s conference. With 100 partners and 5,000 attendees, CA World 2011’s first two day included breakout sessions, education classes, technology demonstrations and networking with attendees from 33 U.S. states and 59 countries. Bill McCracken’s opening keynote with Vivek Kundra, former CIO for the US; Michael Capellas, Chairman of VCE; and moderated by former Facebook executive and founder of R to Z Media, Randi Zuckerberg, did a great job of demonstrating exactly how social media has become a transformational part of today’s business...
