I am currently in Japan at the IT Governance Institute (ITGI) Conference in Tokyo to speak at their annual conference for the third time in the last five years. For those who don’t, know I love visiting Japan and the discussions with employees at senior levels of Japanese enterprises. I get to hear and gain an understanding of their challenges and issues and learn how IT is different from the US and Europe in this market. What is immediately obvious in the airport and the street is the use of personal communication devices with many people having multiple. As I walked from the hotel to the office I couldn’t count the number of people with heads down typing away on their devices, surfing the web or simply using the device to interface with their travel arrangements.
Last evening at the ITGI dinner I was speaking to a small group executives about the transparency that is becoming accepted behavior with social media tools like Twitter and Facebook and the immediacy of information. We discussed the changing demographic of the demand on IT moving from long structured projects to agile rapid innovation, and the requirement to deliver quickly and the reality that the competitive lifetime of a solution is also shrinking. This is not just common to Japan; it is a trend that I am seeing globally mandating a change in the posture of IT as IT transitions to support rapid innovation. At CA World, Nov. 14, Gregory Clancy will discuss aspects of this issues= in his session “Business Technology Management – The Future of Strategic IT.” Greg will discuss the transition of IT evolving into a business technology manager and portfolio strategist who must manage the integrated IT supply chain as a service provider, broker and consumer. This is a fundamental change that IT organizations must make to ensure that they can deliver value to the business they support. If you are at CA World next week make sure this session is on your agenda and if you are not there look out for my tweets on the session (follow me on Twitter @RobertEStroud).PS I am still trying to work out how to tweet and be on a panel or speak at the same time!
