I am sure that you are all aware that the recent high-profile data breaches and heightened threats add up to one thing: a bright future for information security professionals who want to start or re-start a career in risk management. Earlier this week I spent some time talking with Tom Field, the Editorial Director at Gov Info Security on the "Impact of Today's Threats on Tomorrow's Risk Managers".
In the conversation we discussed that Risk Managers need to return to fundamentals including:
- Understanding the information you are protecting - how critical is it that the data not be breached?
- Communicating effective best-practices for protecting that information
- Making sure you have trained risk professionals in your organization, and put them in roles where they can add actual value to the business
Additionally I discussed the requirement for risk managers to keep current in their skills and understand the business. Take a few moments to listen to the conversation and as always I welcome your comments.
