Recognizing women of vision

I recently attended the Anita Borg Institute Women of Vision Awards , which honors women making significant contributions to technology. As I sat in the audience with other CA Technologies colleagues, I was not only impressed by these women’s technical achievements and innovation, but more importantly, by their impact on society. I was – all at once – proud, amazed, humbled and inspired. Take Chieko Asakawa from IBM Research. Becoming blind as a teen did not deter her from pursuing her passion in technology. Her research in accessibility has paved the way for those who are visually impaired and others with disabilities, allowing them to take advantage of all that the Internet has to offer. Then, there is Karen Panetta from Tufts University....

Visualization is more than just a technology that creates images. It is a complex network of interconnected technologies. The old cliché, “a picture is worth a thousand words” implies that visualizations are graphical representations of data designed to present large quantities of information at a glance and to replace text-based displays. Colin Ware , one of the leading experts in information visualization, describes visualizations as a complex process in which the human viewer interacts with technology elements, such as data storage, data transformation processes and graphic engines. Ray Ozzie and The Cloud

Ray Ozzie is an innovator, the kind who inspires awe. He worked on the first spreadsheet, VisiCalc, and he led the development of Lotus Notes. He has been described as one of the greatest programmers in the world. He succeeded Bill Gates as Chief Software Architect of Microsoft. He was a visionary who saw the importance of cloud computing before it was generally acknowledged. He was thinking about the implications of cloud computing when most of us in IT still thought of “cloud” as only a graphic for a WAN. What interests me is how he did it. What makes Ray Ozzie smarter than the rest of us? And even more important, can we get his recipe for genius and rub some on our foreheads? A few days ago, I stumbled on Ozzie’s two long emails to Microsoft...
