Can innovation be managed?

Some time ago I was asked by my manager, Dr. Gabby Silberman, the head of CA Labs, to think of ways to help CA Technologies become more innovative. Over the course of two weeks I did some research on the Web, read magazine articles, and examined the many current and past innovation initiatives at CA Technologies. After much reading and thinking I realized that some of the main problems were continuity and resources, and I arrived at the conclusion that we needed a high-level executive to be in charge of innovation. That person would be the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO in this post). What could be better than having a very capable manager, with significant skin in the game, dedicated to innovation? He or she would provide focus and continuity...

I am not alone in experiencing these difficulties. Our collective trouble with email will lead to its eventual demise. Email's usefulness is reduced by the volume of spam users deal with. Mail...

In my last blog , I focused on the growing trend of replacing Wintel and Linux netbooks, laptops and desktops with smartphones. In this entry, I will discuss some more hardware features and the user interaction that I consider one of the most important game-changers. The previous blog focused more on the processing power that is coming on stream in mobile phones and tablets but another hardware feature is the battery consumption. The battery life of a smartphone differs so greatly from the battery life of the average laptop that it could be measured on different timescales. The battery life of laptops is measured in hours; for smartphone and tablet devices, it is measured in days. Battery duration is another good reason for adoption, but on...
