More Good News for Identity Federation– Microsoft Decides to Support SAML

There have been many good things happening on the federation front recently.  Google’s support of SAML-based federation with Google Apps is certainly positive.

Saleforce.com’s support of SAML raises the profile of standards-based federated SSO in the SaaS world, by the clear market leader

The Liberty Alliance’s recent release of the latest SAML 2.0 interoperability test results where CA and 4 other vendors successfully completed the latest round of federation testing further moves the federation ball down the field.

But the most important recent federation news is that Microsoft announced will they support the SAML 2.0 protocol (instead of just the SAML token) in their upcoming Geneva server.  Once Geneva is released and gets certified in a future Liberty SAML 2.0 test cycle, the federation world will certainly become a better place.  Geneva will go a long way towards making SAML-based federation technology as ubiquitous as it needs to be to enable browser-federation to become commonplace.  While ADFS was a good step, the support of the SAML protocol by Microsoft is a giant leap forward for federation-kind.
