Board not Bored

Believe it or not, the reason I haven't posted a blog recently is that I have a whole bunch of different ideas that I'm putting together, but each requires some external input before I proceed with it.

However, I couldn't wait any longer to post something after an excellent weekend SHARE Board meeting.

As mentioned in earlier blogs, I've been appointed to the role of Deputy Director in charge of Community Development for SHARE, and that meant attending the SHARE Board meeting at SHARE HQ in Chicago this past weekend.

What a great experience! Not only did I get to know the folks at SmithBucklin better (they're the "employees" of SHARE who take the Board's decisions and turn them into results), but I had the excellent opportunity to work, discuss and debate with the outstanding people on the SHARE Board.

I have long thought that SHARE was one of the key ingredients in the success of the mainframe as, in many ways, the highest expression of responsible large-enterprise business computing. This weekend, I saw how the wheels turn in this 54-year-old organization that has been an origin and mainstay of the whole field of responsible business computing.

Leading up to the meeting, I'd had the opportunity to be mentored by Jim Michael, a former VP for SHARE, and this afternoon I'll be reviewing the experience with him to build my understanding and ability to contribute further.

I'm also planning to co-write a blog about the importance about such mentoring with a CA colleague of mine in the near future, given how valuable it has been to me.

In any case, I'm happy to report that SHARE is alive, well, and moving forward with what I can only describe as great consideration, responsibility, and leadership. I'm really looking forward to what this journey holds in the future!
