Last week I attended IDC's Directions 2012 Conference in Boston, courtesy of an invitation from the great folks I worked with last year on our ground-breaking survey on Consumer Driven IT. A year ago, what was then called the "consumerization of IT" was largely confined to discussions around BYOD. When we undertook our study, our hypothesis was that there was a whole lot more going on than employees using their own devices, and indeed we found lots of evidence of IT leveraging public cloud services, social networking, SaaS and more for competitive advantage. We dubbed this new world "Consumer Driven IT" and in the intervening twelve months we have been proven right in our view that IT has a lot more to gain than lose by embracing consumerization.
I also found it very interesting that IDC introduced at their Conference the idea of the "3rd Platform", which they define as comprising mobile, social, the cloud and big data - sure sounds to me like our expanded view of consumerization! It is gratifying to realize we identified an interesting thought-leadership topic a year ago that has legs.
Now we are looking ahead to what might be the next "big idea' for CIOs - any ideas? Let me know via this blog or reach me on Twitter @jackiekahle.
